Thank you Annie! When I looked at the list of foods and their magnesium content from the last article, I thought for sure I was getting enough because I eat a can of beans a day but I finally actually added my average foods up one by one and found I am a bit short. So I appreciate this follow up article on Magnesium! Thank you also for the discount code to the Corpse Reviver drink. I just ordered it the Guava Rose flavor. This will be a nice treat and neat to know it might hopefully boost my magnesium levels. I take Relevate and I'm toying with adding the momentous supplements too since I do tend to wake up in the middle of the night a few nights a week. I usually only stay a wake for under a minute or so but it is annoying and probably can't be good for my brain.
I take the Momentous Sleep support. I have only been taking it for a week, so I can’t comment yet on sleep quality. I also take MagSRT which is a slow release magnesium malate. I have taken this for several years. I eat lots of nuts and seeds. I recently made your protein bars- delicious! How much magnesium do you think they have?
I've been taking Magtein for a few months and wish I could say it helps me sleep but my transition into menopause and the resultant insomnia is overruling it most nights! I will continue taking it since I know it's still a good thing to take, but oh how I wish it reliably helped me get to sleep. Do you have any thoughts on the apigenin contained in Momentous's "sleep pouch" product? It's like my brain goes haywire at night. Would love to know if anyone else experiences this.
Gosh that sounds terrible Carla. Apigenin is a nutrient of interest in brain health and has been studied for sleep inducing properties. You can also get it in parsley and chamomile tea. If chamomile tea helps you with sleep, perhaps that supplement is worth a try. But fixing sleep is not usually about one thing, especially during perimenopause. When we did the deep dive into sleep in January I was impressed by how effective cognitive behavioral therapy was. I also shared the sleep clinic that offers free consults. Email me if you want me to connect you!
TY so very much, and I will refer back to that article. I did recently learn that CBT was the gold standard, and have thought about asking for a sleep study. It's like my brain has forgotten how to induce sleep which has otherwise never been a problem for me.
Hi Annie, such a great article. I'm ordering products (mag & creatine) that you've recommended, anything to keep my brain healthy! I just tried ordering Corpse Reviver variety 12pack, and it says that the BHK15 discount code isn't valid for items in my cart. Any ideas why not?
I have chronic migraine headaches and have been told to take magnesium; however, I have been unable to get clear direction on the form of Magnesium, so have often taken what you classify as gut health magnesium. Do you know if the brain health magnesium would affect migraines? If so Glycinate or L-Threonate?
Hi Joan, yes I think these newer Mg formulations are worth a try. Mg glycinate is recommended for migraine with aura, but threonate is probably just as effective although not as well studied since it is new. Anything that absorbs well and achieves higher brain levels of Mg would be a good choice, ie glycinate or L-threonate. The downside is that they may be more expensive. The less expensive "gut" formulations probably achieve decent levels but you have to take a lot and it may not be getting to the brain.
Hi Mary, Momentous has Magtein. Sorry I didn't make that clear. There are other brands that use this formulation that are also probably fine but I don't have perosnal experience with them.
I take a magnesium supplement but am looking for one that’s unsweetened. (Current one has monk fruit added.) I make a twist of the drink you described on nights I’m craving wine- I add 1/3 c tart cherry juice, 2 tbsp ACV, Mg powder (200 mg) and club soda. It’s quite yummy and I do sleep soundly. I look forward to trying the canned drinks you recommended.
Hi Annie. This is a particularly pertinent topic for me since I have been struggling to maintain my magnesium levels while undergoing chemotherapy and targeted drug therapy to treat breast cancer. At one point in my treatment, my mg levels were so low (combined with low calcium) that it landed me in the hospital with severe muscle cramps, facial distortion and slurred speech. I received many infusions of calcium and mg to raise my levels in the hospital but have struggled to maintain the mg levels since, even though I take supplements (400 mg of magnesium oxide 3 times daily). After reading your article, it seems that perhaps mg oxide is not the form of magnesium that I should be taking. Do you have a suggestion that I can share with my oncologist?
Oh how terrible Lisa. Thanks for sharing your story. Mg deficiency can be quite serious! I recommend finding a Mg formulation from that is more highly aborobable than magox. Both Mg glycinate and Mg threonate are around 80%.
Hi Denise, yes I do. The Relevate gives me omega-3s, vitamin D, and all the other key brain health nutrients. The extra dose of Mg L Threonate really helps my sleep.
Hi there,
You may have covered this at somw point, but do you mind listing all the supplements you take on a daily basis?
Lynn
Great! Thanks
Hi Lynn, sorry I missed your question. Yes, I'll be sharing my supplement routine soon along with a downloadable guide.

Hi Suzanne, sounds like you have it covered! I am guessing that one serving of the bars gives you about 25 grams.

A sleep study is an excellent idea. I'd be happy to do a one-on-one with you as well.

Hi Laurie, I just reached out to Anna at the company and she fixed it. It should work now! Sorry about that--let me know what you think.
Thanks Annie, just ordered the variety pack, and will let you know what I think. 😊
